If you have a multi-region/format player, go over to Amazon UK and order the First Season from Network…it is *spectacular*. You can also pre-order the Second Season from Network there as well (release date is Sept 10) . The Network DVDs have phenomenal video AND audio, crisp and positive 5.1 audio in fact that gives your sub-woofer a workout. Needless to say, I pre-ordered mine from across the pond the day I got this.

Why 3 stars? Overall anecdote and series would have gotten a 5. Minus four stars for the remaster rip-off, plus a star for slimmer packaging/better mark, plus a star for *some* improvement in the audio (now 2.0 stereo as opposed to mono) and a bit of an improvement on Season Two eps video.

And though he is distinct never to be a cop (he doesn’t even have a dependable job), Shawn can discover clues and details that nobody else notices — even the police.

But it backfires when he reports his observations to the police, and is arrested as a suspect. To achieve himself, Shawn pretends to be a psychic — and the gimmick works so well that he decides to do it professionally. So he drags his very reluctant pal Gus (Dulé Hill) out of a dull job, and they kill up regularly hired by the police chief, despite the skepticism of Carl Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), who doesn’t capture their act.

The mysteries are well done, but each one has enough humorous dialogue (”My name is Ichabod Fletchman, Sticky-Icky to my boys”) and kookiness to maintain it from ever being listless. Between kooky mysteries — usually with Shawn flailing around in his pseudo-mystical act — we gain to scrutinize what turned him into such a weirdo, and his modern relationship with his sarcastic father.

There is a puny flaw, though — a disproportionate number of the guilty parties seem to be shapely young women. Fortunately this starts lessening as the season goes on. The mysteries fetch progressively tighter, and the writing cleverer and funnier (”I’m never doing anything blindly with you again! I learned that at the Mexican border. Twice!”) .

Roday is hilarious and shimmering — charming, comical, likable, first-rate, and completely devoid of any dignity (”IIIIII hear a content!”), with some sizable full-body acting. Shawn is one of those people who is half luck and half talent; no matter how outragous he gets, things somehow always work out.

Hill is equally sizable as his quick-witted, responsible, geeky sidekick who tries to hold them out of serious inconvenience, while the crusty Timothy Omundson and tentative appreciate interest Maggie Lawson round off the cast. Corbin Bernsen also makes regular appearances as Shawn’s dad, who considers his son a walking freakshow.

“Psych’s” first season is a delightfully frothy mix of comedy and mystery, with solid scripting and likable characters. Definitely a generous display to sustain an inspect on.

Shawn Spencer (James Roday) is a loser. He’s drifted from job to job ever since graduating from high school. The one thing he absolutely knows he doesn’t want to do is become a cop. That’s what his dad (Corbin Bernsen) has been training him to do since he was a shrimp kid. Growing up, he learned how to witness every small detail at a stare.

Even though Shawn has no desire to be a cop, he can’t conclude himself from calling in tips to the local police based on news reports he sees. After one such tip, he finds himself under suspicion for brilliant too powerful. He snappily talks his contrivance out of it by pretending to be a psychic. In fact, he’s so convincing, Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson) hires him on a fraction time basis to aid with difficult cases.

Shawn is usually teamed up with Detectives Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) and O’Hara (Maggie Lawson) . Lassiter doesn’t contain a word Shawn says and usually tries to jog him up. O’Hara is skeptical but can’t suppose what she sees Shawn pull off time after time.

Also along for the swagger is Shawn’s best friend Gus (Dule Hill) . Gus is reluctant to secure interested in the cases, but Shawn drags him in anyway. And the two have to deal with plenty of provocative cases. There’s a heir who is kidnapped, murders at a spelling bee and a silly convention, dastardly deeds at a high society wedding, and an urban memoir that may be repeating itself.

This present is a blend of comedy and mystery. It airs factual after Monk on USA, and is a perfect fit. While that point to is often dismal, this one is high energy. In fact, sometimes, it’s a bit too over the top. But most of the time it’s fun.

As with many shows, it took a dinky while to hit its stir. The first few mysteries are rather worn and the focus is on Shawn doing his untrue psychic thing. When the prove returned from hiatus with “Forget Me Not,” (easily my common of the season) it found the apt balance. The present is smooth hilarious but the mysteries are worthy tighter.

And the comedy has something for everyone. It’s got speedily, witty dialog, absurd situations, and elephantine body slapstick.

The DVD situation is packed with lots of extras. There are plenty of deleted scenes and one or two commentaries per disc. The first disc contains two versions of the pilot, slow the scenes segments, and some hilarious bloopers. My only sincere complaint with the area is the lack of episode descriptions. The titles are given, but they don’t always trigger my memory as to what the episode itself is about.

The expose took a while to gain its footing. But once it did, it became lots of fun.

Criterion finally released one of my accepted foreign films, the independent itsy-bitsy gem entitled “C’est Near Pres de Chez Vous,” oddly translated as “Man Bites Dog.” Made in Belgium a shrimp over a decade ago, this interesting movie viciously satirizes the media and its esteem for dramatic violence. Criterion not only presents this movie with a heap of extras, they also restored the film to its uncut accomplish. This is valuable because the version I watched nearly ten years ago was missing two scenes that are arguably the most terrifying parts in the entire film.

Filmed entirely in the style of a dark and white documentary, “Man Bites Dog” is an often spoiled excursion into the underground world of a sadistic thug named Benoit, a travelogue of the daily activities and random thoughts of a bloodthirsty sociopath. Most of the time he robs the elderly of their pensions, commits burglaries, drinks himself comic, or kills innocent people for no other reason than that he feels like it. In several scenes we stare Ben instructing the film crew on how to weigh down bodies so they will not float when he dumps the corpses into an abandoned rock quarry. His associates are mostly a rather seedy lot: he often visits an aging woman of questionable virtue and hangs out with an inferior boxer. Great used Benny is not above suddenly killing a pal in a fit of rage, or giving an obsolete woman a fatal heart attack by screaming at the top of his lungs into her face. This guy is a fragment of work, but what truly makes the film painful to recognize is how Benoit gradually lures the filmmakers into sharing his evil crimes.

In a contrivance, and this is the dependable genius of “Man Bites Dog,” the viewer can sometimes understand why the documentarians become enthusiastic in Benoit’s shenanigans. Even as he commits the most rotten of crimes, this hooligan is truly a charming character with many endearing traits. He often waxes philosophic about such disparate topics as architecture and poetry, has a lady friend who takes him to art galleries, and his generosity to the filmmakers chronicling his life knows no bounds. Benny is always willing to select a drink or pitch in to support pay for more film because he enjoys the company of his newfound buddies. Watching this guy play with children in the street even though he committed an gross crime against a youth in another scene presents the documentarians, and by extension the viewer, with a true pickle not easily resolved. Benoit does not picture what Hannah Arendt referred to as the “banality of noxious” but rather an “ambiguity of defective,” and it makes pigeonholing this character at times extremely problematic. To obtain it even more difficult for the viewer to despise Benoit, his likeable mother and grandfather appear from time to time. But abominate him you will, especially after seeing the aftermath of a robbery in the suburbs and an encounter with a couple in an apartment after an all-night drunk. “Man Bites Dog” is a intriguing film.

Even worse, this movie is often quite droll in the procedure only the blackest of comedies can execute. Benoit’s overdramatic French dialogue is a cry, and many of his views on life are fair downright hysterical. You cannot back but laugh when Benoit forces the camera crew to rebury bodies that have suddenly reappeared when the quarry goes dry. When another filmmaker dies later in the film, this same guy performs another eulogy nearly indistinguishable from the first one. I have never felt as guilty about laughing during a film as I have with this one because I knew I honest should not, could not, dared not salvage this funny, but in the demolish I objective could not befriend myself from giggling over Ben’s antics.

The extras on the Criterion disc are not all that impressive. There is a film short starring the actor who played Benoit that is not that profitable, an interview with the filmmakers that is rather short and does not squawk great about the film, a aloof gallery, and some reviews concerning the movie. The transfer quality of the portray is sterling, though, as are the subtitles for this French language film. As far as I know, we have never seen anything further from the people responsible for “Man Bites Dog.” Perhaps these guys were one hit wonders, and if so that is a darn shame. This movie is so brilliantly conceived and executed that it is difficult to imagine that whoever made it would flow into obscurity.

MBD will undoubtedly receive its equal section of lovers and loathers…this is a very hard film to scrutinize due to its extremity of the violence. Though its bellow is gruesome to say the least, the overall attain is a startlingly satirical spy at the media’s fascination at peering from the safety of our collective couches at the levels of violence that speed rampant in television.

An extremely tight budgeted camera crew follow a poetry spouting serial killer through the streets of Belgium in a quasi-documentary. Adhering initially to the unofficial press “rule” of not interfereing with the outcome of events, they win the horrific details of Benoit’s bloodlust, which can only be equalled with the evident psychosis in his mind as He swings from controlled to chaotic. Ben is an lively soul- profitable, charismatic and intelligent- which provides a sterling yet disturbing difference to the depravity of his actions. What gives MBD that extra degree of cinematic edge is the interviews with the crew and cast (all of which coincindently utilize their proper names in the movie, adding a greater sense of realism) …where they argue about costs, running out of equipment and film, again spurring on the documentary feel on a fictional film. When the line is crossed by the crew from neutral observers to participants, they follow the same overall repercussions as our diabolical hero.

Based on Criterion’s history of giving aesthetic transfers, I will be optimistic that MBD will recieve the similar royal treatment. Past VHS copies had both the Unrated Slash (which was missing the terrifying scene of Ben strangling a young boy) and the Unrated Director’s Slit (aforementioned scene intact) . From what I’ve heard, the DVD will be the unedited version. This valuable movie’s message has become even more potent as the query for “reality” shows has risen to ludicrous levels. We may glean MBD distatesful and disturbing, but are we able to gaze away?

Given that they consume a lot of time at the lightless bottom of the ocean exploring “gloomy smoker” geothermal vents, this was visually phenomenal. I heard somewhere that they obsolete a original lighting system, and the color at depth was trustworthy - the teeming life they found down there was unbelievable, and the mystery of the “patterns in the sand cores” was also quite challenging - possibly more so because the real creatures responsible for the patterns had not, by the destroy of the movie, been located.

As a professional scientist in another field, I found this riveting - and so did my six-year-old. Can’t say that about too many nonfiction films out there! One of the best features is that the film does go into detail, but mixes the anecdote detail in with the splendid visuals in such a blueprint that while older viewers are listening to the science as well as looking, the kids are looking at all the frosty (well, hot, actually) stuff and may also be listening.

First class adventure beneath the sea at depths and sea floors which are truly an “other” world…..but not. Magnificent visual wonders, facts and information about our new world and a astonishing adventure into the improbable world of our earth’s past. Peep it for yourself. Words are pale imitations.

This movie is great more than a prurient survey at repressed pubescent male sexuality, which is what you might put a question to from other reviews. If that’s all you’re looking for and you’re clear to regain it here, you may obtain enough to satisfy, but you’ll be missing the point. It’s astonishingly graceful, an economically and beautifully executed movie, rotund of well-developed, richly varied, entirely believable characters, a enchanting, deeply satisfying memoir that is never insensible or tiresome and yet never exploitative, melodramatic or cheap, and photography and music that are so extraordinarily perfect and fair that each frame could hang in a major museum. That this was any director’s first full-length movie is nearly incredible–it would be a major accomplishment for any director even at the peak of his career.

Before I bought this DVD, I’d only seen it on an stale VHS tape from the library, where it was cropped to fit a 4:3 TV hide and the sound was so bad I couldn’t understand about half the dialog. I loved it anyway, but it was hard to inspect. In fact, powerful of my reluctance to purchase the DVD was apprehension that it might honest be that ragged taped version transferred to disc. When I saw that there were two DVD versions available, but neither one with subtitles (which I was convinced it needed), I didn’t know which one to order, so I impartial picked the newer one almost arbitrarily. Boy, am I satisfied I did. This one is a appreciate.

The case notes don’t execute any claims about being newly remastered or anything like that, but they could. I can now observe that this may be the most beautifully photographed movie I’ve ever seen. It’s a low-budget movie, but it clear doesn’t peer like it. The sound is as distinct as a bell now, so I can understand every word even without subtitles, and I hadn’t even noticed the music before because I couldn’t really hear it, considerable less the many improbable scenes when the “music” is honest the background sound. That’s all been fixed perfectly in this DVD.

But that’s not all. Not only has this long-overlooked savor of a movie been perfectly restored and preserved on DVD, but a very superior collection of newly recorded additional material has been added, and none of it is the cheesy promotional junk studios usually cram onto DVDs (there’s not a single trailer or celebrity-hype “making of” feature) .

There is an trustworthy audio commentary track by the director Fred Schepisi, plus two long video interviews with him and others eager in making the movie (and not one of them looks like George Clooney, thank God.) All of it is colorful, informative and very spicy. To be impartial, I’d never heard of Fred Schepisi before this, and I’ve never seen any of his later and more successful movies, but I’m a fan now.

I cannot recommend the older DVD version of this movie, level-headed available through Amazon sellers, with a salacious and completely misleading mask photo of a priest leering at a cowering naked boy. Amazon describes that DVD as 1.33:1 [4:3] aspect ratio, so it may well be the same as the terrible VHS. But I would recommend this unusual DVD enthusiastically to anybody with the slightest interest in this movie, or in sparkling, fine movies of any kind.

Just in case Amazon at some point combines reviews of the two DVD versions into one, I’m going to belabor the point: the version worth having is copyright 2008 and distributed by Industrial Entertainment, its ASIN is B001EAWMPG, and the UPC on my copy is 858334001381. The veil photo has a titanic profile of a boy, with an apparently naked adult man sitting in the background (the photos are from two completely separate scenes, by the method) . I yelp you to bag it while you can.

I can discover why this film won so many awards when it came out in 1976. It is beautifully acted by all the considerable players, has some glowing photography and at its core is the theme of the stultifying atmosphere of a Roman Catholic school for boys destined for the priesthood. But the hormone-laden youngsters fight a losing battle, and while some manage to suppress and progress down the path of righteousness, others fail and sin. It is a improbable film thoroughly worth watching, unless you are looking for sexual titillation in which case you will be disappointed, as the subject is treated tastefully with subtlety and finesse.

The image quality is (mostly - notice below) very righteous. Even with the 16mm film source the extra resolution of Blu-Ray is apparent and some of the film is staggeringly effective. As has been stated in another review, the fresh interviews are pristine.

The variety and scope of the clips is agreeable. The makers have sourced every possible movie from private hands (cine films) and NASA and there’s a tall deal I’ve not seen despite 40 years of interest in the subject.

The narration is well written and appropriate. This feels like a anecdote with anecdote rather than a straightforward documentary.

Here’s why I disfavor this status and consider it’s a wasted opportunity:

Despite the quality of the film clips there are some that have obvious and very clear visible and not honest minor anomalies but persistent substantial sizable unlit blobs in the same station on the cloak. This ‘dirt’ persists across clips taken at varied times, even months apart and in very different locations, so it wasn’t on the unique film. That means, logically, that it’s a projection fault and that it wasn’t spotted during the HD transfer to Blu-Ray. that’s VERY disappointing.

More importantly there’s the recount of the music. I’m British and (until recently) our TV documentaries ragged the recent audio soundtrack alone rather than additional music. If music was feeble then it was sparingly and appropriate and it certainly didn’t catch in the contrivance of the novel audio. During this presentation the music is advance permanent. It never stops except for a few seconds here and there. It drowns out narration and more importantly it all but removes the new audio. Subtitles are provided for capcom recordings (voices to and from the spacecraft) but they wouldn’t be needed if the infernal music would impartial shut up! Not only that but the music isn’t of edifying quality and is stupidly over-blown, spurious drama in every moment. The scenes are dramatic enough, leave them alone please. In the extras there are standalone clips of the astronauts training (etc) and I though at least with these there’d be the new audio but no, the music is even worse and there’s NO current audio at all. Uncouth. I realize that this is the norm for American TV documentaries (Nothing personal, you invent the best TV in the world on the whole) but it ruins the experience and should be resisted.

So, a very very great position partially harmful by the music and some transfer anomalies. If you can cope with the music then don’t let the anomalies attach you off. It’s probably the best NASA footage on Blu-Ray so far but it could have been the best corpulent cessation.

The older footage has been remastered and looks agreeable.

My only complaint with this package is the Blu-ray case. They could have broken-down a better center hub for holding the discs. The one they outmoded makes it difficult to prefer the discs for viewing.
